Blade Radius
In both ends, our blades curve upwards, similar to skis. This is simply to avoid getting caught in uneven ice. The long, seemingly straight section of blade in between the ends is however also curved. The curvature of this area will determine the characteristics of the skate, how it turns, how easily it turns, and how fast it might go. Simply, it decides how good your skate will feel.
Back in time, Nordic skates commonly had blades with a 30-50m radius. Such a long curvature barley allows turning. Those skates went in the direction were they were pointed. This forms a quite stiff and inconvenient technique, not allowing you to stand for long on either foot.
Nowadays, Nordic skating technique i more similar to speed skating. A sport that reaches twice the speeds of Nordic skates. Athletes achieve those speeds with a combination of physique and technique. But what radius do their skates have? 20-25m is the answer.
A shorter curve allows a more efficient technique where the legs strength can be utilized through the whole stroke. This brings much higher speeds from the same amount of effort. This is true for low speeds as well. But this requires a skate built for performance, with a curve which allows efficient skating.
Skyllermarks skates have a contact area with multiple radius. Directly under the foot lies a "main-radius" ranging from 23-27m depending on the model. In front of, and behind, the main radius our blades have a turn-radius of 8m. The transition in between is entirely tangential, in other words seamless.
Our multi-zone curve combines great handling and effortless glide. You will be able to improve your skating, becoming both faster and more energy efficient. Our skates also aid in learning crossovers when turning. There is nothing better than following the coastline of cliffs in the Swedish archipelago, while pumping more speed into every stroke.
Skyllermarks skates are developed by skilled skaters and designed and tested to make your skating better and more enjoyable!
